Edges remain important from a security standpoint, as they define the boundaries between networks managed by different parties. However, the term has taken on a broader meaning as businesses move computing, storage and network resources closer to end users and connected devices to improve performance, reduce latency and support real-time applications. ## What is a network edge? In the context of enterprise networking, the network edge is where a network connects to another network, device or service. This may be the boundary between a private corporate network and the public internet, or a connection between an enterprise site, a cloud platform or an edge computing environment. The network edge plays an important role in routing traffic, enforcing security policies and managing connectivity between different environments. ## Where is the network edge exactly? Network edges are present wherever there is a device or piece of infrastructure that facilitates traffic crossing from one network to another.  Such devices can include: - Firewalls - Routers (includes fixed and wireless/5G routers as well as mobile phones) - Switches - Load balancers - Servers used in Content delivery networks (CDNs) - Edge computing infrastructure, such as local servers and gateways These devices, and the network edge by extension, can be located in a variety of physical places, such as: - [A data centre](https://www.consoleconnect.com/locations/) - [A branch office](https://www.consoleconnect.com/services/access-ports/) - [A mobile device](https://www.consoleconnect.com/services/mobile-connectivity/) on the road or at an employee’s home - A home router at an employee’s or third party’s home - An industrial or retail site where connected devices and applications are deployed Specific locations of the enterprise network edge will depend on the size and complexity of the network. For example, an employee using a wireless router or dongle without a corporate VPN to access cloud services may be doing so over the public internet, in which case they will not cross the network edge until they access services on the private network (such as a private Sharepoint drive). But an employee using a 5G wireless router along with a corporate VPN may be accessing those same cloud services over a private network, with their traffic being pulled back from their end device to the corporate data centre and then back out to the cloud. In this case the network edge will likely exist within the data centre.  ## Why is the network edge important? The devices that are in place must work together to protect the network from attacks coming from other networks, such as the public internet. Edge network devices also route traffic to the correct destinations, and may dynamically adjust configurations to help maintain network performance and application availability. From a management perspective, the network edge is a complex and constantly evolving part of any network. As new threats emerge and new technologies are deployed, businesses must regularly reassess their edge infrastructure to maintain security, performance and reliable connectivity. Some of the benefits of a strong network edge include: - **Improved security:** The network edge helps enforce security policies and control traffic between networks, reducing exposure to potential threats. - **Increased performance:** A well configured network edge can improve application performance by routing traffic efficiently, reducing congestion and supporting low-latency access to services. - **Reduced costs:** Effective edge security and management can reduce operational overheads and help limit the impact of security incidents, although additional security measures are still needed to address more sophisticated threats. ## Challenges in edge networking The top three challenges an enterprise might face when deploying an edge network are: - **Security:** Edge networking can increase the attack surface as more devices and locations become connected. Enterprises need consistent security policies, monitoring and updates, alongside a plan for responding to incidents across distributed environments. - **Complexity:** Managing multiple devices, sites and systems can be challenging. Enterprises need effective management tools to maintain consistent configurations, connectivity and performance across their edge infrastructure. - **Cost:** Edge networking can require investment in suitable devices, connectivity and security systems. Ongoing monitoring, maintenance and lifecycle management can also add to the total cost. ## Benefits of edge networking in multi- and hybrid cloud environments Edge networking can facilitate public cloud access for enterprises in a number of ways, including: - Improving the performance of applications that are hosted in the [cloud](https://www.consoleconnect.com/clouds/). Placing computing and caching resources closer to users can reduce the distance data needs to travel, helping lower latency and improve responsiveness. - **Improving the security of applications that are hosted in the cloud.** Security controls and network segmentation at the edge can help protect access to cloud applications and data. However, their effectiveness depends on how these controls are implemented and managed. - **Reducing the costs of accessing the cloud.** Processing data locally and caching frequently accessed content can reduce unnecessary data transfers and cloud resource consumption in suitable workloads. The overall savings depend on the application and deployment. Some specific edge network technologies can be used to improve connectivity and application performance, including: - **Content Delivery Networks (CDNs):** CDNs use distributed servers to deliver content to end users more quickly. By caching content closer to users rather than relying solely on a centralised data centre, CDNs can reduce the distance data needs to travel and improve performance. - Network Function Virtualisation (NFV): The foundation of Network-as-a-Service (NaaS) or Software Defined Cloud Interconnect (SDCI), NFV allows network functions to run as software on virtualised infrastructure rather than dedicated hardware. This can provide greater flexibility in deploying and managing network services, while potentially reducing infrastructure costs. - **Software-Defined Wide Area Networking (SD-WAN):** SD-WAN helps optimise traffic across enterprise sites and cloud environments. Through application-aware routing and policy-based path selection, it can help improve performance, manage congestion and support network resilience. ## Automation in edge networking: What are the benefits? Automation can help enterprises manage increasingly distributed edge networks more efficiently. Its main benefits include: - **Reduced costs:** Automating configuration, provisioning and monitoring can reduce manual effort and operational overheads.
